Spotify Introduces “Messages”: A Seamless Way to Share Music, Podcasts, and Audiobooks

Background

Spotify is launching a powerful new feature called Messages, designed to make sharing the content you love with friends and family quicker and more personal.

Over the years, musical recommendations have become a central part of the Spotify experience—friends and family pass along the songs, podcasts, and audiobooks they’re excited about millions of times per month. Now, Spotify is giving users a dedicated space within the app to make those moments even smoother. As Spotify explained, the goal is to give users “what they want” and make those connections more seamless and streamlined.

What Spotify Messages Brings to the Table

Messages is rolling out this week to both Free and Premium mobile users aged 16 and up in select markets. You’ll access it within the app by tapping on your profile photo in the upper-left corner—or tap the share icon while listening to something in the Now Playing view, choose a friend, and hit send. Once the recipient accepts, you can send text, emojis, and share content back and forth—with everything neatly stored in one place.

Messages can automatically suggest friends based on your previous activity—such as shared family or duo plans, Jams, Blends, or collaborative playlists—making it easy to stay connected with people you already interact with.

Designed with Control and Safety in Mind

Spotify emphasizes that users remain in full control of their Messages experience. You can choose to accept or reject message requests, block users, report objectionable content, or turn off Messages entirely via settings. The platform also ensures your conversations are safe—protected by industry-standard encryption both in transit and at rest—alongside proactive scanning and moderation for harmful or illegal content.

Compliments, Not Replacements

Spotify makes it clear that Messages is meant to compliment, not replace, existing sharing habits. You can still send tracks to friends via platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok, or Snapchat. Messages simply offers a clean, in-app option for more private or intimate sharing.

Why It Matters

For fans, creators, and anyone passionate about sharing culture:

  • Listeners gain a private, integrated space to chat about and rediscover shared tracks or shows.

  • Creators benefit—each share sparks potential discovery and growth through peer-to-peer recommendations.

  • Spotify aims to become more social, deepening engagement and connection within its ecosystem.

As this rolls out to more markets, keep an eye on how your community responds to this new layer of sharing — it could reshape how we connect musically in everyday life.
